We’re here to dive into how to play casino baccarat and are bringing you expert secrets to help you win big.

The History of the Baccarat Card Game

Before we start talking about how to play baccarat, let’s talk about how this card game was created.

Baccarat is a fairly old card game that was actually invented in 15th century Italy by a man named Felix Falguiere

Falguiere named the game after the Italian word for zero, baccara. Despite the game’s Italian origins, it eventually came to be known by the French spelling of baccarat.

The reason the game developed this new name and became popular in France in the first place was thanks to King Charles VIII. King Charles loved the game and it soon was a commonly played game among the nobility in his court.

From France, the game spread to other nations. In England, baccarat gained popularity and was even featured in the James Bond series.

From Europe, the game was quick to spread to the Americas. In South America and the Caribbean, it received its second name: Punto Banco. It later spread to the United States in the 1950s when it first showed up in a Las Vegas casino.

In the past, Baccarat was mostly regarded as a high-stakes game for seasoned players, but today it’s accessible to anyone who wants to give it a go.

The Basic Baccarat Rules

Whether you’re looking to start a baccarat game in person or in an online casino, the rules of this game are fairly straightforward.

To get started, you’ll take your seat at the table and place your bets on whichever hand you think will end up equal to or closest to the number 9.

Before you make your bets, it’s important to know that aces are worth 1, 2-9 are worth their face value and all face cards have a value of 0.

Now that you understand the rules of the game, you’re ready to place your bets. You have three choices to bet on:

  • That the banker’s hand will win the round
  • That your hand will win the round
  • That the round will result in a tie

After your bets are placed, the dealer will proceed to draw two cards for the player and two cards for the dealer.

Whether you’re playing online baccarat or in a casino, it’s important to note that only two hands will be dealt regardless of the number of players. One hand represents the player and the other hand represents the banker.

After the cards are drawn, the hand that is the closest to or equal to 9 is the winning hand. If the hand’s total is 10 or greater, 10 is subtracted from the final amount. For example, if the banker draws a 3 and a Jack, their total is 3.

Drawing a Third Card

In Baccarat, after two cards are drawn, the decision can be made to either add a third card to the banker’s hand, to the player’s hand, or to both hands.

This decision to draw another card isn’t made by the player or the dealer; it’s made by the rules of the baccarat game.

For the player, a third card will be drawn if their total is 1 through 5 or is a 10. If they have a total of 6 or 7 they will stand while having a total of 8 or 9 is called a natural and means that the banker cannot draw.

Determining when the banker draws a third card is a little more complicated. The banker draws a third card if:

  • Their first two cards total 3 and the player’s cards total 1 through 10.
  • Their first two cards total 4 and the player’s cards total 2 through 7
  • Their first two cards total 5 and the player’s cards total 4 through 7
  • Their first two cards total 6 and the player’s cards total either 6 or 7.

If the banker’s cards total 7, they stand regardless of what the player’s total is. If the banker draws an 8 or a 9, they have what is called a natural and the player is unable to draw another card.

After the third card is drawn, the hands are totaled and the hand with the total closest to or equal to 9 is the winner. If both hands have an 8 or a 9, the round is tied.

Receiving Your Bets and Paying Commission

One thing to know about baccarat before sitting down at a table to play is that bets aren’t as straightforward as other games in the casino.

In baccarat, players are charged commission based on their winnings. If they lose, they aren’t required to pay any commission.

The commission is typically no larger than 5% and is only charged on bets that are placed on the banker’s hand.

That means that if you place a bet on the player and win, you aren’t responsible for the commission.

The reason this is done is that it’s slightly more probably that the banker will win the hand. That means that while you’re more likely to win money betting on the banker, you’ll also have to pay for it.
